The world’s population is expected to reach eight billion on November 15 this year, according to a UN report. India is predicted to overtake China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity, to value our common humanity and to marvel at health advances that have increased life expectancy and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Despite the increase, population growth has been the slowest since 1950, according to a report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
In 2030, there are expected to be 8.5 billion people on earth, in 2050 it is expected to be 9.7 billion and in the 2080s about 10.4 billion, according to the report.
More than half of the increase expected in the coming decades will be concentrated in eight countries, according to the report. The countries mentioned are Congo-Kinshasa, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
